Hiya! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Welcome to another edition of the digital pharmacist digest!

A new year means a new year to incorporate new habits into my life (or at least try!). Each workday morning, I'm reading a random page from The Pocket Universal Principles of Design to start the day with some learning and creative problem solving, thinking up ways to incorporate the principles from what I just read into my digital health work. I highly recommend those in solution and service design to check out the book.

If you want to see some embarrassingly novice python code, check out my GitHub to see the script I run every morning to generate a random page number and automatically save it is a csv file. Always happy for feedback on how to improve!

Thanks for reading,
Kevin

๐Ÿ“–What I'm reading

๐Ÿ’Š Patient safety - The Safety of Inpatient Health Care

An update to a pioneering patient safety study from 30 years ago. โ€œOver the course of this 30-year interval, care has become more complex, and diagnostic and therapeutic options to treat disease and alleviate human suffering have advanced. The health care delivery system itself has changed dramatically with the advent of EHRs and the movement of complex care to ambulatory sites, which has resulted in the most severely ill patients being treated in acute care hospitals. Despite stunning advances in medical science, we still have important gaps in patient safety.โ€

โœ Work life - Bored at work? Your brain is trying to warn you

I'm in a fortunate position where being bored at work is definitely not a problem. It is something I do ponder and have great discussions with friends. We spend so much of our lifetime at work, so shouldn't we love and be excited about what we do? The author sums it up well with their conclusion - "That doesnโ€™t mean weโ€™ll never grow bored at work. Even the best of us will feel jaded at a bad day or tedious task. But if we can tap into our curiosity, meaning, and agency, we can better weather those dull storms or find enjoyment in work."

Well written description and examples describing the differences between sustaining technologies and disruptive technologies. A fascinating perspective into the use of AI by the big five tech companiesโ€™ (Apple, Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft).
